Hygroscopic compounds are those that, when exposed to the atmosphere, absorb water from the air, sometimes enough to dissolve themselves in solution. While this is often considered quite an obstacle with regards to storage of compounds, weighing, etc., many compounds that are hygroscopic are useful as dessicants to remove water from less hygroscopic substances or for drying liquid compounds.
